- Under one roof — the hardware hall at Roadside Station Miki carries tens of thousands of items from 70-plus Miki makers, kitchen knives included[1][26].
- A single maker — Misuzu Hamono sells its own knives from a Meiji-era townhouse; closed Thursdays[10].
- See the forging — public demonstrations beside the free hardware museum on set Sundays, including 1 November and 6 December 2026[16].
- The festival — 7–8 November 2026, 9:00–16:00[4].

What Banshu Miki cutlery is
Banshu Miki Uchihamono (播州三木打刃物) was designated a national traditional craft on 8 April 1996, and the designation names five tools: saws, chisels, planes, plasterer's trowels (kote) and kogatana, small utility knives[6][7]. Kitchen knives are not on the list. They are sold as "Miki hardware" (三木金物), a regional collective trademark since 2008[8], alongside sickles, work tools and machine tools[7].
The craft's official profile traces its roots about 1,500 years back, to an exchange between local smiths and smiths from the Korean kingdom of Baekje[6]. The city traces its rise as a hardware town to Hideyoshi's siege of Miki Castle, begun in 1578[7], which ended with the castle's fall in 1580[8]. Carpenters came to rebuild, smiths came to make their tools, and Miki tools travelled with those carpenters to Kyoto and Osaka[7]. For a knife buyer, that history means kitchen knives sit next to chisels and saws here, often from the same makers.
Where to buy in Miki
Shopping is split between a large hall on Route 175 south of the centre and a maker and a museum in the old town. These are the places whose details we could check against their own sources.
Roadside Station Miki — the hardware hall
Roadside Station Miki / Kanamono Museum 道の駅みき 金物展示即売館
The hardware exhibition and sales hall on the second floor of Roadside Station Miki, set up as a base for promoting Miki's hardware industry. The station's page lists about 20,000 items from more than 70 Miki manufacturers, and the hall's own site says about 30,000: kitchen knives, chisels, planes, saws, garden tools and more under one roof. Specialist staff answer questions.

The hardware hall (金物展示即売館) is on the second floor. The station's page lists about 20,000 items from more than 70 Miki manufacturers — the designated tools, kitchen knives for home and professional use, and higonokami folding knives — and says specialist staff answer questions[1]. The hall's own site, run by the Miki hardware wholesalers' cooperative, says about 30,000[26]. It takes major cards, iD and PayPay (as of February 2025)[1]. Hours are 9:00–17:00[2]; the station closes only on 1 January[3]. Downstairs stands the permanent hardware eagle, installed in 2023 and made from about 6,000 pieces of Miki hardware[9].
Misuzu Hamono — a maker in the old centre
Misuzu Hamono 三寿ゞ刃物製作所
A traditional forge producing hand-forged kitchen knives in Miki. Uses time-honored forging methods to create blades with excellent cutting performance and distinctive handmade character.

Misuzu Hamono (三寿ゞ刃物製作所) works from a Meiji-era wooden townhouse near the Namera shopping street, registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property in 2014; its gallery, Kokoira, also sells other Miki hardware[10]. It says it has done its grinding and finishing by hand for generations, and that its founder devised its stainless-clad warikomi knife in 1946, the first of its kind made in Japan — the company's own claim[11]. Its range runs from its own "Misuzu" shape to gyuto, nakiri, deba and yanagiba, with hand-cut name engraving[12].
The hardware museum and its forge
Miki City Traditional Craft Museum 三木市立金物資料館
A free-admission museum dedicated to Miki's blade and hardware history. Features exhibits on traditional forging techniques, historical tools, and the evolution of Miki metalworking. Includes a retail section where visitors can purchase knives and tools from local makers.
- Admission: Free

The city's hardware museum (三木市立金物資料館) is free and a 6-minute walk from Miki-Kaminomaru Station[15]. Beside it, members of the local forging-preservation society take turns at public demonstrations over a bellows-fed fire, one craft at a time: saws, chisels, planes, kote or kogatana. The season's schedule lists Sunday 1 November and Sunday 6 December 2026 (the bellows festival), 10:00–13:00; rain cancels[16].

Banka (播鍛), in neighbouring Ono, describes its knives as a local tradition of some 250 years. It publishes no shop hours, and its online shop does not ship overseas[17], so contact it before you go.
Our map also lists Miki Hamono Manufacturing and Kanekoma, but their details are not confirmed against their own sources, so contact them before planning a visit.
The Miki Hardware Festival 2026
Miki Hardware Festival
Miki's hardware festival, first held in 1952 as a hardware trade fair. It centres on a direct-sale exhibition of Miki hardware and a bargain market (金物びっくり市, added in 1973); the 2026 programme also includes a blade memorial service. The organisers count about 160,000 visitors in a typical year.

The organisers have announced Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2026, 9:00–16:00, at Mikiyama Sogo Park, Miki City Cultural Hall and other venues. The programme includes a direct-sale exhibition of Miki hardware, a bargain market, a blade memorial service and the hardware eagle[4]. It began in 1952 as a hardware trade fair, and the organisers count about 160,000 visitors in a typical year[18].
Come by train: the organisers warn of heavy traffic and run free circulating buses from Ebisu Station and from Roadside Station Miki to the main venue[19]. The forging demonstration on 1 November falls the Sunday before, so one Kansai week can take in both.
Published prices and closing days
The hardware hall and the festival publish no prices online[1][4]. Misuzu does: on 1 October 2026 its online shop listed Misuzu-shape knives from ¥6,523 (105 mm) to ¥15,378 (160 mm), tax included, with engraving at ¥770, and warned that orders were taking about five months to ship[13]. Its brass-and-urushi series reaches ¥19,635 for a 210 mm VG10 blade[14].
| Place | Open | Closed |

The museum opens on a Monday that is a holiday, and on a day-after-holiday that falls at a weekend[15]. Hours change, so confirm on the day.
What to look for in-store
- Kitchen knife or carpenter's tool? In the hall they sit side by side, and the designated craft items are the tools.
- Know the shape. Write down the Japanese name — gyuto (牛刀), nakiri (菜切), deba (出刃), yanagiba (柳刃) — and show it to staff. Our knife types guide explains each.
- Choose the steel honestly. Misuzu's own guide notes that carbon steel rusts very easily and needs care after every use, while its stainless blades are easy to look after[12]. See carbon vs stainless.
- Settle tax-free before engraving. Ask whether the shop is registered before you order anything custom.
Tax-free from 1 November 2026
Japan's tax-free system switches to a refund method on 1 November 2026[5]. It applies to anything bought from that day, with no transition period[24]:
- Pay the tax-inclusive price at a registered shop; ¥5,000 or more before tax, per shop per day, qualifies[25].
- Within 90 days, show your passport and the goods at a tax-free kiosk when you leave Japan[25].
- Do it before you check in your bag — the check cannot be done afterwards[24][25]. With a knife: kiosk first, then check the knife into the hold.
- The shop, or its refund agent, then pays the tax back[25].
We found no tax-free statement on the official pages of the Roadside Station hall or Misuzu Hamono, and festival stalls should not be assumed to be registered. Ask before you pay, and read our 2026 tax-free shopping guide.
Getting to Miki — and flying home
- Train: the Kobe Electric Railway runs from Shinkaichi in Kobe to Miki in about 55 minutes[20]. For the museum, get off at Miki-Kaminomaru, the stop before Miki[21].
- Bus: Shinki buses run from JR Sannomiya (about 50 minutes) and JR Akashi (about 40 minutes)[20].
- Roadside Station Miki: about five minutes south of the Sanyo Expressway's Miki-Ono interchange by car[22]. By bus, a loop from Ebisu Station runs on Saturdays and Sundays only[23]; on weekdays, plan on a taxi.
Flying home: knives go in checked baggage only. Keep the wrapped knife reachable until the tax-free kiosk, then pack it deep in the suitcase. Our guide to flying with Japanese knives covers the rest.
Pairing Miki with Sakai and Seki
Kobe is the natural base, about an hour away by train from Shinkaichi. For kitchen knives above all, add Sakai, south of Osaka. And if you want to see two sides of Japanese metalwork, compare Miki's tool-making with the cutlery city of Seki.
